One of America’s most important inventors was Alexander Graham Bell. He helps you to “phone home”. This was only one of his many inventions. The world we know today for communication would not be possible without Alexander Graham Bell. His original drawing of the telephone looked simple but is the beginnings of great things to come. Alexander Graham Bell holds 18 patents for his many different inventions. A fact that most people do not know is that Alexander Graham Bell’s passion was working with the deaf and hard of hearing and it was out of this passion that he developed the telephone. He had a very famous student. Do you know what her name was? Alexander Graham Bell contributed so much to America and we still see the impact of his life and inventions today.

The Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur were two Americans who are generally credited with inventing and building the world's first successful airplane and making the first controlled, powered and sustained human flight on 17 December 1903. In the two years afterward, the brothers developed their flying machine into the first practical fixed-wing aircraft. Although not the first to build and fly experimental aircraft, the Wright brothers were the first to invent aircraft controls that made fixed wing flight possible.

The brothers' fundamental breakthrough was their invention of "three axis-control", which enabled the pilot to steer the aircraft effectively and to maintain its equilibrium. This method became standard and remains standard on fixed wing aircraft of all kinds. From the beginning of their aeronautical work, the Wright brothers focused on unlocking the secrets of control to conquer "the flying problem", rather than developing more powerful engines as some other experimenters did. Their careful wind tunnel tests produced better aeronautical data than any before, enabling them to design and build wings and propellers more effective than any before.

They gained the mechanical skills essential for their success by working for years in their shop with printing presses, bicycles, motors, and other machinery. Their work with bicycles in particular influenced their belief that an unstable vehicle like a flying machine could be controlled and balanced with practice.

George Washington Carver: 1864- 1943

Bios: He is known for his inventions and work in agricultural science.

He is also known for being one of the first african american men to pioneer the agricultural science field.

He was denied admission to his first choice college based on race, but was accepted in as the first make black student to Simpson College. He was enrolled to study art and piano. He won fame as an artist.

Carver won fame for his crop rotation system and his great achievements in agricultual science.

He later won fellowship at Tuskgee University and was award an honorary doctoral degree from Tuskegee University.

Thomas Alva Edison: 1847- 1931

Interesting Fact: Edison was completely deaf in one ear and 80% deaf in the other ear. Can you find out which ear he lost all of his hearing and which one had 20% hearing?

Thomas Edison married twice and had 6 children overall, which was 3 children from each marriage.

He only attended 3 months of formal schooling, but was well educated by his parents.

He received his start at stenographer for Wester Union.
